A Good Day

A Good Day by Kevin Henkes

This book is about 5 characters having a bad day for different reasons. For example the bird is sad because he lost his favorite tail feather. Then things turn around for each of them and they become happy. I liked the book. I like books that start from 1 to 5 then picks up from 5 to 1!! Helps kids connect the text better!

A Rock is Lively

A Rock is Lively by Dianna Hutts Aston
2013 International Reading Association Teachers’ Choice

This was a really cool book. I couldn’t focus on the text because of how beautiful the pictures were! The use of metallic was brilliant. It was informative; I can see this drawing children simply from the illustrations which would probe questions.

Growing up with Tamales

Growing up With Tamales by Gwendolyn Zepeda

I really enjoyed this story. I like how the illustrator showed the young girl changing as she grew up. She knew that as she grew up there was more for her to do, but never always felt behind her sister. To read in the end she wanted to start a business was amazing. Having children think about their future is great!

Cool story. It starts out with a young girl wanting to go fishing with her grandad because she wants to meet his fishing buddy. Once they’re there more people begin to arrive and she asks her grandad if any of them are his buddy when he replies no she wonders when will he show up. Eventually she finds out that grandad’s fishing buddy is actually a bird! I enjoyed this story a lot.

The All-I’ll-Ever-Want Christmas Doll

The All-I’ll-Ever-Want Christmas Doll by Patricia Mckissack

The main character Nella wants a doll really bad for Christmas and she get it. On Christmas she plays with the doll, but since her sisters didn’t get one they are off playing with each while Nella plays alone. She soon realizes that it’s just not the same not playing with her sisters and invites them to play with her. From the illustrations I felt like the story was being told in the 60s! I like the color usage as well.

What Happens on Wednesday

What Happens on Wednesdays by Emily Jenkins

This book was hard to follow. I’m not sure if it was the illustrations or the story but it definitely didn’t keep my attention. A young girl basically is talking about what happens every other day except on Wednesday because on Wednesday’s her family does something special.

The Chicken Chasing Queens of Lamar County

The Chicken Chasing Queen of Lamar County by Janice Harrington
2008 Charlotte Zolotow Highly Recommended Title

The main character is sassy and determined. She loves messing with the animals on the farm but her main goal is to capture Miss Hen!! She tried an tried but Miss Hen was too quick. One day she thought she had her and when she got close enough she saw Miss Hen with her baby chicks. She decided to just sit and watch them! The illustrations are in collage format. A must read for young children. Could easily be tied into a animal lesson.
